Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE): As a kid, I have always heard people talk about pursuing Electronics and Communication Engineering(ECE) and how it is an up and coming field. I, however being a kid was totally unaware of exactly what the field is, and where to even get started? So, to be very honest, I was oblivious to the idea of it until I actually got into an engineering college. I wish I knew about it before, not because I regret it, but because I wanted to start learning more about it at an earlier stage of my life.

WHAT IS ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING?

Have you ever made a phone call? Or sent a really cool video to your friends using your data plan? Or simply read an online article using your    Wi-Fi? Well, I am sure, most of you have. Moving on, have you ever wondered how the traffic lights work and how they are always working along with the same pattern? Or have you ever observed those periodically twinkling Diwali lights and wondered how are they so synchronized? How interesting would it be to actually know how it all works! Studying things like these sums up to Electronics and Communication Engineering. It is basically the “Building Blocks” of the devices we use every day. It covers the study of semiconductors, communication devices, counters, the modes of communication, designing circuits, and what not!

WHY ECE?

This field plays a vital role in today’s times. From setting an alarm to switching on an LED to making a phone call.

  • ECE is deep-seated in our lives. There isn’t one sphere of engineering where the basics of electronics aren’t used. Whether you’re a civil engineer or a software engineer.
  • Even a common man makes use of ECE without even realizing it.
  • I feel that is the best thing about ECE. Applying it to life is everyone’s cup of tea!

With all gadgets turning “smart” these days, ECE makes sure you are smart too! It opens up a wide range of opportunities in a large number of fields. It redefines the limits to which you can discover. Taking up this course gives you an edge above other students as you can interview for IT(software) as well as Telecommunications(hardware) companies. It definitely promises a good placement offer too. We’ll talk more about this, keep reading!

WHICH COLLEGES OFFER IT?

ECE is one of the main branches and is available in most engineering colleges or universities. The top eight colleges in the country comprise of the mighty IITs but there are many other worthy colleges that provide quality education along with good placement. It is not always necessary t get into IIT’s as they are not famous for being easy and approachable. So you shouldn’t beat yourself if in case you are unable to crack the IIT’s. Here is a list of the top ten engineering colleges offering ECE.

  1. Indian Institute of Technology Madras
  2. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
  3. IIT Bombay
  4. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
  5. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur
  6. IIT Roorkee
  7. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati
  8. Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad
  9. National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli
  10. Indian Institute of Technology Indore

PREREQUISITES

Taking up any course requires certain conditions to be met and ECE is no exception. It mainly requires doing the three essentials of engineering. Physics, chemistry, and maths. But there’s more to it. Have a look!

  • The first and foremost requirement is completing physics, chemistry, and maths in classes 11th and 12th.
  • You should get at least 60-75% marks in your board examinations. (This depends on the cutoff of different colleges)
  • Lastly, you should have cleared the entrance exam of the college you’re aiming for. (if the college has one).

FURTHER SCOPE

Now one might wonder why should you even go through the trouble? Is it worth it? Firstly, learning can never go waste, but if you’re looking for something materialistic(and not philosophical), ECE has an amazing scope in the employment sector.

  • MANUFACTURING and DEVELOPING: ECE students stand a good chance in industries like consumer electronics and manufacturing technologies. IT, Telecommunications, Health equipment, Chemical synthesis, and what not! They definitely have the growth of India in their able hands.
  • GOVERNMENT JOBS: We already knowhow glorified government jobs are, simply for their stability, and pay. Graduates in ECE also have great opportunities in the Government sector. From design to manufacturing to operation to maintenance, it’s all under this mighty subject.
  • THE FUTURE: Electronics and Communication practically form the future of every country. By developing servers and technologies Electronics engineers have the power to take the nation ahead.
  • ENVIRONMENT: The technologies aren’t just for industries and machinery. They can also be developed so as to heal the environment Electric cars, green energy, etc. are all up and coming concerns.

SHOULD YOU DO IT?

For a course like this, it’s necessary to have an interest in learning the “know-how” behind the simplest gadgets you use every day. A scientific temperament instills the actual zeal and curiosity to get to the core of various gadgets and hence increases your patience with things that may take time. It won’t always be a piece of cake, to know this subject but to keep trying would be the key to crack it. Thus, it is seriously not recommended if you do not really have any interest in science or engineering.

Every subject is great in its own way and to do justice with its greatness wanting to know it, is important.

FAQ (frequently asked questions):

Q 1. What subjects are necessary to do ECE?

Ans.- Physics, Chemistry, and Maths are the mandatory subjects to take this course.

Q 2. What is the full form of ECE?

Ans.- ECE stands for Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Q 3. Is ECE available in all the colleges?

Ans.- Yes, ECE is one of the main branches of engineering and is available in almost all engineering colleges.

Q 4. Is it mandatory to give JEE for engineering?

Ans.- JEE -Mains/Advance is the prime admission exam for almost all engineering colleges in India. Many colleges keep a certain number of seats to be given on the basis of boards PCM percentage too.

Q 5.What is the minimum percentage of marks required n board examinations?

Ans.- This depends on different colleges but it mostly lies between 60-75% of PCM. For admission in BIITS, 80% of PCM marks are required.
